Your stain must be pretty dry by now, so here's a great video on how to remove a dried red wine stain from a carpet. I think the key to it is to be patient and work at the stain slowly. As you can see the results are good.

When a stain is fresh there are a few things you can do, such as covering the stain with salt or baking powder to blot up the wine. Both white wine and club soda are supposed to be good for neutralising the stain. Personally, I would use club soda and drink the white wine.
