Tips for diet, living with diverticulitis/diverticulosis

Working in healthcare, I take care of people every day that deal with a variety of conditions on daily basis. Many of those conditions involve introducing a certain type of diet. One of these conditions is diverticulitis.

Diverticulitis is a medical condition that involves the formation of small pouches in and along the colon. It is typically not a problem until those pouches become inflamed or infected, usually due to food particles becoming trapped. There are two main changes you should make in your diet if you do suffer from diverticulitis.

    1. Adapt into a high fiber diet. Fiber works at "keeping things moving" through the intestines. It adds bulk to stool and promotes regular bowel movements. Fiber is also though to keep the intestines in optimal shape. Beans, fruit, veggies, and whole grains/ enriched items are good choices for fiber.

    2. Avoid nuts, seeds, and most berries. It is thought that these items can actually get stuck in the pockets, leading to the inflammation and later, infection. While these items are usually fibrous, a differerent type of fiber should be eaten (as mentioned above).

That is a great thread. I once knew a women who had diverticulitis and eat a tomato. She later told me she knew the dangers but could not resist because she loves tomatoes so much. She endured so much pain and was in the hospital for about 2 months. Thanks so much for your thread and tips.

I love these tips. My grandfather had diverticulitis and since I am in charge of taking care of him for the most part...cooking and cleaning and whatnot, I will make sure that I am focusing on fiber and scrutinize for nuts...he loves peanuts so this is going to be a hard one.

sesame seeds are especially dangerous since people dont really chew them just swallow them whole
If you only have enough information to write one line it may be possible however improbable that you are simply not as expert as you think you are.
