If you want to cook onions for your burgers and hot dogs, but don't want to blacken the bottoms of your pans on the barbecue, here's a really simple tip. Take a roll of kitchen foil, and rip off a reasonably sized piece. Now fold it in half, and then half again. Work along each edge, and fold up about an inch of foil. Twist the foil together at each corner - as if you were wrapping a sweet or making a Christmas cracker - and you have a disposable cooking pan for your onions, mushrooms or whatever.
Add a little oil in the bottom, then stir in the veggies to coat them with oil and cook on the barbecue with everything else. When you've finished, just throw the foil away.
