Guitar Self Study Advice & Tips

After teaching adults and children for some 20+ years and having a formal background in music performance, playing in professional bands and recording, I have the following advice to offer beginners. If lessons are out of reach due to time constraints or even financial conditions, try to become self adaptive and utilize all your resources to learn. Divide your regiment into days and keep track as if you were training in a physical sense like at a gym or sports club/meeting. Keeping a constant regimented practice session will ensure progress which in turn provides motivation. Divide your practice and learning into chords, scales, exercises for both hands and finally songs. Each provides an overall development and helps break the monotony of learning only a limited amount of concepts. Utilize free sources such as online free teaching sites and down-loadable PDF files. Join forums and ask questions. Experienced players love to share knowledge. When you can play a few chords and even a few improvised licks from simple pentatonic scales, try running ads in the music section of Craigslist or Backstage to find a jam partner. Try forming a meetup group to meet other guitarists in your local area who are on your same level or slightly more advanced.
“Beware the irrational, however seductive. Shun the ‘transcendent’ and all who invite you to subordinate or annihilate yourself. Distrust compassion; prefer dignity for yourself and others. Don’t be afraid to be thought arrogant or selfish. Picture all experts as if they were mammals. Never be a spectator of unfairness or stupidity.
